Speedy Tortoise

Speedy is our resident tortoise. She was donated in 2006 and weighed only 3 ounces. She had been improperly feed and housed and was suffering from lack of minerals in her body. It made her shell and bones very soft, like rubber.  After treatment she started to grow and grow and grow! Today she is 30 pounds and 6 years old.  She spends  the warm months at Dr Billings house in a giant grassy area.  During the cold months she stays here in the comforts of the animal clinic where you can visit her in the lobby.  She is a favorite of the local kids.

Speedy is an African Spur Thigh Tortoise , a member of the Sulcata Family of large tortoises.  The only other tortoise that gets bigger is the Galpagos Tortoise.  With good care it is possible for her to live up to 150 years old and get up to 250 pounds in weight.  She eats a strict vegetarian diet of mostly turnip greens and occasional fruits.  Speedy does not bite.  She doesn't drink water but gets a spa soaking twice monthly to keep hydrated.

Feel free to come visit Speedy anytime with your camera!
